Can I use Sphene completely free of charge?
Yes. The complete Sphene Second Brain engine (<25MB RAM), sub-millisecond SQLite FTS5 index, full local Aegis encryption, the Hermes Agent & MCP integration, interactive visual dashboard, and desktop PWA are 100% free and open-format. You can self-host forever with zero restrictions on notes or volume.
Will future cloud services affect local self-hosting?
Never. Local-first sovereignty is the foundational principle of Sphene. Any future cloud relay or agent automation services will be strictly optional additions. Your local markdown files, encryption keys, and self-hosted engine will remain 100% functional and free forever.
How will zero-knowledge cloud sync work?
When cloud relay becomes available, notes will be encrypted on your device using client-side AES-256-CBC PBKDF2 before leaving your machine. The relay servers will only route opaque encrypted ciphertext. We will never have the ability to read your notes.
Is there any vendor lock-in?
Zero. Unlike proprietary cloud note-taking apps that trap your thoughts inside closed databases, Sphene guarantees digital permanence. Every note is plain Markdown with standard YAML frontmatter legible in 40 years.
